Telsmith Decreases Energy Consumption 1.5 Million kWh Per Year with Lighting Upgrade

Telsmith provides a full range of processing equipment to the aggregate, mining, industrial, and recycling industries with crushing and vibrating equipment, and modular and portable plants. Telsmith is a subsidiary of Astec Industries, the largest supplier of aggregate processing equipment in North America. Telsmith required a partner who had deep energy management expertise and knowledge in the industrial market. They turned to Chateau Energy Solutions to update the existing lighting at their manufacturing plant with LED lighting for improved performance and energy savings.

The 232,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant runs long operating hours increasing the need for a smart lighting system inside and outside the plant. To meet these requirements, Chateau proposed and installed LED lighting with a wireless system that will reduce demand and usage, including full dimming capability, and the ability to connect with future BAS. The facility houses space with several different uses. All office areas received LED fixtures with doorframe kits and wireless sensors. The distribution center and manufacturing spaces both received fixtures with LED high bay and wireless sensors. Additionally, all exterior fixtures were replaced with LED including pole lights with wireless sensors.

In total, Chateau Energy Solutions replaced and upgraded more than 1,000 fixtures with LED technology and wireless sensors. The LED lighting upgrade saved Telsmith nearly $175,000 annually, decreasing energy consumption by 1.5 million+ kWh per year, with a 1.9 year payback. Through the process, three separate rebates were secured providing $71,000.

The lighting upgrade of the facility centered on lighting the space more efficiently and effectively. In addition to improving the lighting quality, the lighting upgrade also improved maintenance cost and reduced the carbon footprint. “Chateau’s team driven approach to understand and meet their customers’ needs is evident in every aspect of how they conduct business,” said James K. Valdes, Manufacturer Engineering Manager at Telsmith. Telsmith is now enjoying an almost immediate positive financial impact from the LED lighting upgrade.
