The client is an established cloud data center operator managing a live, fully operational facility that supports critical customer workloads.

Challenge

The data center experienced a failure of a critical power transformer serving approximately 3 MW of IT load. The failure immediately forced the facility to operate on backup power, increasing operational risk.

The situation was compounded by timing. The failure occurred during the end-of-year holiday period, when many manufacturers, logistics providers, and technical resources across the power industry were unavailable or operating with limited staff. At the same time, industry-wide transformer lead times ranged from 16 to 24 weeks, making a traditional replacement path untenable for a live data center.

Chateau Energy’s Role

Although Chateau Energy was not the original supplier of the failed transformer, the team had previously partnered with the operator on other projects and was familiar with the site’s infrastructure and operating standards. Chateau Energy was engaged to support an accelerated recovery effort focused on engineering validation rather than standard replacement timelines. Despite the holiday timing, manufacturer and supplier contacts responded immediately to Chateau Energy’s call.

Solution

Chateau Energy identified a transformer in available inventory that was not a one-for-one replacement but had the potential to meet the site’s electrical and operational requirements.

The engineering team immediately:

  • Verified electrical compatibility, protection coordination, and operating parameters
  • Coordinated directly with the data center’s engineering team to validate installation and commissioning requirements
  • Expedited logistics and delivery to site within four days, despite the holiday period
  • Supplied spare components and critical parts to support additional contingencies

Once onsite, Chateau Energy engineers worked alongside the data center’s technical staff to support installation, testing, and re-energization, ensuring a controlled and safe return to normal operations.

Outcome

  • Replacement transformer delivered and installed within four days versus a 16–24 week industry lead time
  • Normal power restored to a live cloud data center supporting approximately 3 MW of IT load
  • Eliminated prolonged reliance on backup generation, reducing fuel cost and operational risk
